Ok, let’s be completely honest: Custom widow treatments are NOT inexpensive. Their hand-crafted beauty and durability does come with a price higher than your typical store=purchased pre-made drapery. However, do not feel overwhelmed, here are three ways to help manage the cost.
First, if you have existing hardware that you either like or can live with, keep it. New drapery rods, medallions, rings, etc. can add hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars to a window treatment project. If you are getting stationary draperies with a top treatment like a valance, opt to have the valance mounted to a 1×4 board. This way, the stationary side draperies can be either mounted directly to the board under the valance or you can use a cheapo extension curtain rod. The same can be done with a cornice.
Second, don’t choose a fabric that has a bigger price tag than your wallet. Generally, you will need less fabric yardage if the you choose a solid rather than a patterned fabric because you have to match a patterned fabric across all window treatments. Also, don’t be lead astray by the IDEA of linen and silk fabrics. They are expensive and need to be hand-stitched which can add, literally, thousands of dollars to the labor cost. There are MANY beautiful faux silk and faux linen fabrics that have the same luxurious look and feel of their expensive counterparts and only you (and your wallet) will know the difference J
Lastly, if light control and privacy are a primary concern, try a mix of manufactured shades from companies like Hunter Douglas and then use the custom treatments to beautify and soften the space. Generally, manufactured products like blinds and roller shades are less expensive than custom made fabric shades and provide great privacy, light control and, in some cases, energy efficiency. Combining these with stationary side panels with tie-backs or top treatment styles to tie the room together and add a touch of your personal style.
So, you are ready to beautify your home with custom window treatments and curtains but feel overwhelmed with the various choices of draperies, curtains, valances, cornices, Romans shades, fabrics, hardware, finishes, trims, etc. Take a breath and relax because here are a couple of considerations to get you over the hump and make this process a little easier.
The best way to get started is to determine your primary concerns. Take a look at your window. Can your neighbors see what you are doing or eating? Does the sunlight wake you up in the morning or create a glare on your TV or computer screen. If you answered yes, then your primary concerns are likely privacy and light control. If this is the case, you have just narrowed your selection down to a style of Roman shade or functional draperies that you can open and close. From there, your workroom will help guide your selection of Roman shade styles (flat, relaxed, hobbled, etc.), ways to jazz up draperies and whether you should use blackout lining.
Now, if you are lucky enough to not worry about privacy or light control then you really just want something that can contrast and soften the square lines of the windows, walls and ceilings. Stationary drapery panels on the sides of the window are not only a great way to add softness and beauty but they will also elongate the space when installed close to the ceiling. Also, choosing a style of top treatment like a shaped cornice that incorporates curves or arches can create a great complimentary detail to the square lines of a windows and walls. If you like the idea of curves and swoops but want something a little softer look than a cornice, then your workroom can help you choose from a variety of valance. Of course, there are lots of options when it comes to any of these styles, but understanding your basic needs and concerns primary concern is a perfect way to narrow your options and then let your custom workroom guide you from there. Most of all, remember to have fun!!
